Your boat is an investment, and you want to make the most of the season, right? Well, you’re in luck: there are some great boating destinations right near our North Texas Marine locations in Gainesville and Fort Worth. We have all the details on where to go this summer and how to have the most fun on the lake.

The Best Boating Spots in Gainesville, Texas 

Lake Texoma

Named for its location on the Texas-Oklahoma border, Lake Texoma draws millions of visitors each year for its campgrounds, trails, wildlife refuges, and of course, boating and water activities. 

Whether you’re looking to plan a camping trip and enjoy the outdoors, stay at a fancy resort, or simply spend a fun day with the family, there is something for everyone at Lake Texoma. The area of the lake nearest Gainesville is the Red River, which flows along the Texas/Oklahoma border.

What to Expect at Lake Texoma 

  • Fishing: this fishing destination is known as the Striper Capitol of the World, thanks to its self-sustaining population of striped bass. The lake is also home to other types of bass, in addition to catfish, crappies and bluegills.

  • Equestrian Trails: 25+ miles of equestrian trails surrounding the lake, including the scenic Cross Timbers Hiking Trail, attract both horseback riders and nature enthusiasts.

  • Wildlife: on either side of the lake you’ll find Eisenhower State Park and Lake Texoma State Park. The lake is also part of the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, offering plenty of opportunities to spot native species, from river otters to bald eagles.

Spend the night

  • About a half hour’s drive from Gainesville is Cedar Bayou Marina and Resort, which offers cozy cabins, scenic views and outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing and boating.  Access to Cross Timber Trails — 18 miles of nature trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding — is an added bonus.

  • Another popular spot for overnights, Cedar Mills Marina & Resort offers RV rentals, as well as cottages and cabins with lakeside views. The resort is a perfect destination to observe wildlife, including white pelicans in the spring and fall. 

    Grab a drink or a bite to eat at the resort’s Pelican’s Landing Waterfront Restaurant, where something is always happening: the restaurant often hosts live bands, wine tastings and gourmet dinners.

Local Attractions in Gainesville, Texas

  • Explore the trails at the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge or join a guided tour (including walking and boating tours) to view local birds, animals and plant species.

  • Take the family to Frank Buck Zoo, a small town zoo home to over 130 animals.

  • Enjoy a wine tasting on the farm at Fitzel Winery, often to the sound of live music. Hungry? The winery also offers a limited dinner menu.

The Best Boating Destinations in Fort Worth, Texas 

Possum Kingdom Lake 

Looking for a “jumping off” point to explore the area, or a fun event to attend with family and friends? Possum Kingdom Lake has all of the above. Referred to as the “Great Lake of Texas,” Possum Kingdom Lake — known locally as PK — comprises 18,000 acres of water at the base of the Palo Pinto mountains. 

What to Expect 

  • Fishing: largemouth, striped and white bass, channel and blue catfish and white crappie are all plentiful here, making great sport for anglers.

  • Hiking & biking: the aptly named Hike and Bike Trails consist of 16 miles of nature paths around the lake’s central peninsula. Rest areas throughout allow trailers to take in the sights and learn more about the area from the many informational displays.

  • Golfing: avid golfers can test their skills at The Cliffs Resort, a stunning, highly rated course that has been named one of the toughest in the state.

  • For ultimate relaxation with all the amenities, book your stay at Lush Resort. Here you can sip a cocktail in the lakeside pool, take a nap in a cozy beach pod, or book a fishing guide to take you directly to all the best spots.

  • When it comes to campsites, you have your pick. The Possum Kingdom State Park campgrounds include four main camping areas: 

    • Spanish Oaks

    • Lakeview

    • Shady Grove

    • Chaparral Trail


These campgrounds have various amenities, such as restrooms, grills, some with water or electricity. In addition, there are 10 primitive campsites for a more fully immersive outdoor experience.

  • Saturday, July 8: Hell’s Gate Fireworks Show — hosted by the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, this epic display includes fireworks shot from both sides of Hell’s Gate.

  • Saturday, July 15: Hell on Water Fun Run — an annual poker run organized by the Possum Kingdom Muscle Boat Association

Eagle Mountain Lake 

Arguably one of the most beautiful bodies of water in North Texas, Eagle Mountain Lake is a 8,694-acre lake is ideal for boating, fishing and watersports, plus on-land activities for nature lovers. Relax at one of the lakeside parks, or find a fun event to enjoy with your crew. 

Once you visit, you might just stay awhile: Eagle Mountain Lake is known for its incredible lake houses with gorgeous views of the water and surrounding hills.

What to Expect 

  • Fishing: due to its depth (the lake is 47 feet deep), Eagle Mountain makes the perfect home for fish that prefer the deep, colder water. Bass, catfish and crappie are plentiful here.

  • Wildlife: diverse populations of wildlife, both on land and in the water, to observe at the lake. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will enjoy all that the nearby Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge has to offer.

  • Hiking: enjoy views of the lake from land on one of the many surrounding trails. Five miles of trails can be found at the 400-acre Eagle Mountain Park.

These are our favorite spots on Eagle Mountain Lake to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends.

  • Twin Points Park – a lakeside beach with a boat ramp, and grassy picnic areas and pavilions for rent. 

  • Shady Grove Park — public swimming, a free boat ramp and a fishing pier make Shady Grove a perfect place for summer fun on the water. On-land amenities include volleyball and pickleball/tell courts, softball fields, a playground, walking trails, and a beach area.

  • Saturday, June 24: Fort Worth, TX Water Lantern Festival — a 30-minute drive from the lake at the Panther Island Pavilion, watch as lanterns are released along the Clear Fork Trinity River at this magical event.
